守礼門の上部に掲げられている「守禮之邦（しゅれいのくに）」という言葉は、「礼節を守る国」という意味を持ち、琉球王国がいかに礼を重んじる文化であったかを表しています。

この門は、かつて中国からの使節団「冊封使（さっぽうし）」を迎えるための儀式の場でもありました。
