金閣寺の歴史

The History of Kinkaku-ji

金閣寺（正式名称：鹿苑寺）は、京都市北区にある臨済宗相国寺派の寺院で、その歴史は14世紀にさかのぼります。
Kinkaku-ji (officially called Rokuon-ji) is a Zen temple of the Rinzai sect in northern Kyoto, with a history dating back to the 14th century.

室町幕府三代将軍・足利義満が1397年に建立したもので、もともとは義満の別荘「北山殿」として造営されました。
It was originally built in 1397 by Ashikaga Yoshimitsu, the third shogun of the Muromachi shogunate, as his villa, called "Kitayama-dono."

彼の死後、遺言により禅寺として改められ、「鹿苑寺」と命名されます。
After his death, the villa was converted into a Zen temple according to his will, and named Rokuon-ji.

現存する金閣は1955年に再建されたもので、1950年に当時の学僧による放火で焼失するという痛ましい事件がありました。
